THE PURSUITS OF LORD KIT CAVANAUGH is the second book in the Cavanaughs series by Stephanie Laurens. Lord Christopher "Kit" Cavanaugh and Miss Sylvia Buckleberry met at a wedding, had an instant physical attraction, but had a chilly first encounter. Since then, both have gotten a sense of purpose in their lives when they meet again. Kit is building a yacht business and Sylvia is the driving force behind a badly needed school for disadvantaged children. Having found their passions in life leads to them rediscovering and growing a passion for each other.

At that earlier meeting, Sylvia's reaction to Kit is largely due to his reputation as something of a rake and her uncomfortable physical attraction. Likewise, Kit's initial unfavorable reaction to Sylvia was due to the cold reception he got from her and his uncomfortable physical attraction to her. When these two meet up again, they soon find that their initial perceptions about each other were, thankfully, very wrong. As they work together to make Sylvia's school a success and, in turn, help the local community, Kit finds Sylvia to be a woman with a hidden passionate nature, and Sylvia finds Kit to be a compassionate and kind man she can admire. As is often the case in a Stephanie Laurens novel, there is mystery and an element of danger in THE PURSUITS OF LORD KIT CAVANAUGH, but Laurens expertly balances those elements with the burgeoning love story. There are red herrings that Kit and Sylvia must sort through before finding the villain behind everything. I love that this hero and heroine work together, and the respect rather than condescension that Sylvia gets. Mutual respect and physical attraction eventually lead to deeper feelings.

THE PURSUITS OF LORD KIT CAVANAUGH is Pride and Prejudice, Stephanie Laurens-style. The secondary characters in this story are interesting and entertaining. The development of the relationship between the hero and heroine seems very natural and fitting for who the characters are. I look forward to the next historical romance by Stephanie Laurens
