Bruno has just been assigned to a new division. His boss is Lieutenant Wicks, head of the violent crimes division. After the first day on the job, Bruno realizes that things might not be what they should be. After only one day in this division, he is approached by Wicks and is told that he is going to go undercover in the narcotics division. Wicks explains that there are some shady cops in this division and they want his help to expose them.

Bruno doesn't want to become a snitch but he takes the job anyway. After one day on the job, he goes home to find out that his father has been arrested for attacking one of the women on his mail route. Bruno suspects that two of the cops in his new division is behind this, but he needs a way to prove it. These two cops, Blue and Thibodeaux, believe in "shoot first, ask questions later." They also have no problem setting up a crime scene to make it look like they had to shot the criminal.

David Putnam writes a really great police thriller. You can tell that Putnam uses his experience as a policeman in writing THE INNOCENTS. Putnam gets you right into the depth of what an undercover cop has to go through in the line of duty. In this story, it shows how sometimes you don't know who you can really trust. Putnam describes everything so great that you feel that you are right in the story. I have not read the other books in the Bruno Johnson series, but that didn't make things confusing, and now I want to read the rest of them. If you enjoy police thrillers, go out and get this book; it will not disappoint you.
