Colin Somerville is a soldier on one last mission for the Home Office. It was supposed to be simple enough, but he and his charge end up fighting for their lives. The scullery maid at a nearby inn unexpectedly has the skills to help them, but soon it becomes clear Lucy has her own problems. They're both afraid to trust and reluctant to ask for aid. Colin pledges his service to her cause -- whatever it is -- but first, he needs her help to complete his royal mission.
CHASING THE HEIRESS is a finely crafted novel. Miles's use of language and description is immersive. The interwoven plots are complex and detailed. Every character, no matter how small their role, is given personality. The dark moments are heart-breaking, and the happier scenes are joyous. I didn't want to put the book down until I reached the final page, and even then, I hated to leave that world.
Fortunately for me, CHASING THE HEIRESS is the second in the Muses's Salon Series, and I'm looking forward to entering this world again. I had no issues following the story despite missing the first book JILTING THE DUKE, but I advise starting from the beginning. There's clearly a larger story in play, and I think readers will derive the greatest pleasure by getting it all in order.
I heartily recommend CHASING THE HEIRESS to readers who like their historical romance seasoned with mystery, adventure, and drama.
Book Summary
Heiress On The Run
Lady Arabella Lucia Fairborne has no need of a husband. She has a fine inheritance for the taking, a perfectly capable mind, and a resolve as tough as nails. But what she doesn't have is the freedom to defy her cousin's will--and his will is to see her married immediately to the husband of his choosing. So is it any wonder that she dresses herself as a scullery maid and bolts into the night?
Colin Somerville's current mission for the home office is going poorly. Who would have expected otherwise for a rakish spy tasked with transporting a baby to the care of the royal palace. But when, injured and out of ideas, Colin stumbles upon a beautiful maid who knows her way around a sickroom, it seems salvation has arrived. Until he realizes that though Lucy may be able to help him survive his expedition, he may not escape this ordeal with his heart intact…
