SCREWDRIVERED is Book three in Alice Clayton's Cocktails series. Even though SCREWDRIVERED is part of a series, I was still able to enjoy it without feeling lost or confused in any way. This is a story that will especially appeal to romance geeks like me, since the female main character is an admitted romance novel junkie. Part of the conflict in the story comes from the fact that Viv is attracted to the hot cowboy that she thinks she should be attracted to -- based on years of exposure to common romance tropes.

In addition to the romance, SCREWDRIVERED works as chick lit and follows Viv as she explores who she is as a person and what direction she wants her life to go in. Viv is a flawed and realistic female protagonist. The light and fun moments balance the more serious ones. Viv's friends add more interest to the story and help flesh out her character.

The object of Viv's lust is cowboy Hank who is something of a male bimbo. Mild-mannered librarian Clark Barrow secretly carries a torch for Viv. Rather than a lot of explicit love scenes scattered throughout this story, SCREWDRIVERED has sexual tension, romantic longing, and fantastic chemistry. I love a good beta hero like Clark. I love the way Alice Clayton has Clark alternate between normal "daytime Clark" and sexy voiced "night-time Clark" to throw Viv off balance a little and have her rethink who and what she wants. The romance between Clark and Viv really crystallizes for me when they have long conversations and get to know each other better.

SCREWDRIVERED is a fun and romantic story of one woman's journey through life. I love this story's sweet and enigmatic hero. I look forward to reading more books by Alice Clayton in the future.

Book Summary

Readers back for a third round of the bestselling Cocktail series will enjoy a madcap romantic comedy about bodice ripping and chest heaving, fiery passion and love everlasting. Plus a dash of paperwork filing and horseshi—wait, what?

By day, Viv Franklin is a tough-as-nails software engineer who designs programs and loves hospital corners. By night, Vivian’s a secret romance-novel junkie who longs for a knight in shining armor, or a cowboy on a wild stallion, or a strapping firefighter to sweep her off her feet. And she gets to wear the bodice—don’t forget the bodice.

When a phone call brings news that she’s inherited a beautiful old home in Mendocino, California from a long-forgotten aunt, she moves her entire life across the country to embark on what she sees as a great, romance-novel-worthy adventure. But romance novels always have a twist, don’t they?

There’s a cowboy, one that ignites her loins. Because Cowboy Hank is totally loin-ignition worthy. But there’s also a librarian, Clark Barrow. And he calls her Vivian. Can tweed jackets and elbow patches compete with chaps and spurs? You bet your sweet cow pie.

In Screwdrivered, Alice Clayton pits Superman against Clark in a hilarious and hot battle that delights a swooning Viv/Vivian. Also within this book, an answer to the question of the ages: Why ride a cowboy when you can ride a librarian?
