Suzanne owns the Cackleberry Club along with her two best friends, Toni and Petra. Suzanne is also an amateur detective. While getting her hair done, she smells smoke and runs out to find the building next door on fire. Not only did the place burn to the ground, but her good friend Hannah is killed.

At first Doogie, the town sheriff feels it is just a fire caused by neglect. Later he finds out that the fire was set on purpose. Now the town has a murder on their hands. As much as Suzanne doesn't want to get involved, several of the town's residents want her to see what she can find out.

Kit and Rich are getting married and Doogie shows up to arrest Rich after finding explosive caps in his trunk. Suzanne knows that Rick had nothing to do with this. So when Kit asks for help, she has no problem saying yes.

As Suzanne is looking into what really happened, several other suspects come to mind. Suzanne is doing her best to weed out several of the suspects and she still has to keep her cafe running smoothly.

SCORCHED EGGS is the second book by Laura Childs that I have read in the Cackleberry Club mystery series. I enjoyed this book as much as the one that I have read before this. Laura Childs does clarify the characters from the previous book, so there is no guessing as to who is who. There is some humor in this book, which helps move it along.

Laura Childs includes in the back of this book recipes on the food that they dish up at the Cackleberry Club. SCORCHED EGGS is a delight, and I can't wait for the next one in this series.

Book Summary

In Laura Childs’s New York Times bestselling mystery series, Suzanne, Petra, and Toni—co-owners of the Cackleberry Club Café—are equally good at serving up breakfast and serving up justice. This time they turn up the heat on a deadly firebug…

As Suzanne is getting her hair colored at Root 66, she’s stunned to witness the County Services office next door suddenly go up in flames. Concerned neighbors throng the streets, and the fire department does their best. Unfortunately, their best isn’t enough to save longtime civil service worker—and friend to the Cackleberry Club—Hannah Venable.

Soon enough, it’s discovered that an accelerant was used to fan the flames. Someone set the fire on purpose—was Hannah the intended victim? Suzanne, Petra, and Toni vow to smoke out the culprit.

Unfortunately, the list of suspects is as varied as the Cackleberry Club’s menu. When Suzanne finds a possible connection between the fire and the nearby Prairie Star Casino, she comes to realize that the arsonist wanted something very big and bad kept secret. And if the ladies aren’t careful, they may be the ones gambling with their lives…
