Layla is a half demon, half gargoyle and just trying to figure out where she fits in living with Wardens- gargoyles who keep the world safe from demons. Zayne is her friend, and a Warden, who she happens to have a huge crush on. Zayne, along with anyone else, is off limits for Layla because one kiss from her and she will steal your soul. Roth, a soulless demon, shows up in Layla's life and though she knows she should stay away she has a hard time doing that. Roth ends up bringing out a part of Layla that she never knew existed and when things become dangerous she has to make a big decision on who she really trusts and where her loyalties lie. Will she trust Roth, a demon, who the Wardens would name her a traitor over? Or sacrifice a part of her just to keep Zayne and the Wardens happy, no matter what's at stake?
I became quickly engrossed in WHITE HOT KISS and found it very hard to put down from the beginning. Layla is such a complex character and I really liked going on this journey with her to figure out who she was and what she needed to do. She really gets put through a lot with the other Wardens that don't live with her. She isn't very well accepted among the masses because of her half demon side. Zayne is such a great friend to Layla and I could easily see why she cared so much about him. He did some things to make me a little upset with him throughout WHITE HOT KISS but I think he always has Layla's best intentions at heart. Roth is easily my favorite character. He may be a demon but he is a demon you will love. He does so many things for Layla that no one else is able to do for her. He shows her a side of her that she never explored and I don't think it is one that she will easily disregard.
The setting of WHITE HOT KISS was perfect. There didn't need to be much world building since it was set in this time but the paranormal part was explained very well. The only con I had about the paranormal parts was I wish I had seen a little bit of uniqueness to it. The stories behind the Wardens and the Demons are really nothing new so I was sad to not see a little twist to their backgrounds.
When it came to the romance side of this book I was very pleased with it. I'm usually pretty picky when it comes to a book that has a love triangle but this one definitely worked. Layla has good reasons to feel the way she does about both Zayne and Roth and nothing felt forced. The romance also didn't take over the entire story. The story was mainly about the paranormal elements with romance as a side story.
I would recommend WHITE HOT KISS to anyone who loves YA paranormal with some romance mixed in and sexy gargoyles and demons. I will definitely be reading Stone Cold Touch as soon as I can get my hands on it.
Book Summary
One kiss could be the last
Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.
Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.
Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.
But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.
