Adam is a Level Eight telepath and an interrogator in the police department. When a new case presents itself, Adam is called to add in any psychic evidence. Adam and his partner, Detective Cherabino, quickly find out that the victim is one of Adam's old students, one he damaged by way of negligence. With the department facing budget cuts and layoffs looming in the near future, Adam is terrified of compromising his fight with his addiction that his job provides. Now the Guild is sending an agent to monitor Adam, putting even more pressure on him.

This is the second book in the Mindspace Investigations series, and I did not read the first. I've heard it compliments the first book well, but I can say that it serves all right as a stand-alone. There are a few brief moments that would've made more sense had I read the first, but I was able to fill in the blanks adequately. Adam was by far my favorite character. The amount of attention to Adam's character arc is astounding.

The reader can feel his pain and frustration, his guilt, and his trepidation. I felt more for him than I have felt for a main character in some time, and by that I mean I could feel what he was feeling. All of this is due to the outstanding writing by Alex Hughes. I have thankfully never dealt with addiction, but the picture that's painted in this narrative is harrowing and contains real depth. The plot was deliciously complex and one that I had to go back and reference earlier pages to keep up with at times. This is not to say that it was too complicated, only that it was full of twists and subplots. Another sign of good writing. SHARP is a fresh take on urban fantasy in a market filled with stale ideas.

Book Summary

HISTORY HAS A WAY OF REPEATING ITSELF, EVEN FOR TELEPATHS....

As a Level Eight telepath, I am the best police interrogator in the department. But I'm not a cop—I never will be—and my only friend on the force, Homicide Detective Isabella Cherabino, is avoiding me because of a telepathic link I created by accident.

And I might not even be an interrogator for much longer. Our boss says unless I pull out a miracle, I'll be gone before Christmas. I need this job, damn it. It's the only thing keeping me sane.

Parts for illegal Tech—the same parts used to bring the world to its knees in the Tech Wars sixty years ago—are being hijacked all over the city. Plus Cherbino's longtime nemesis, a cop killer, has resurfaced with a vengeance. If I can stay alive long enough, I just might be able to prove my worth, once and for all...
