I have to say that I love love love the idea of Nathaniel Cade, the President's vampire. I loved him from the first book and I will love him in the last. Christopher Farnsworth has made this interesting idea take hold in my mind and I know that I can't wait to find out just where he takes us next! The concept is fresh, it is highly intriguing, and something about it just captivates my attention. This latest installment of the Nathaniel Cade novels, RED, WHITE, AND BLOOD was action-packed, and in line with the times. Throw in one bad ass vampire and this book is just about as good as it gets.

Nathaniel Cade has been blood oathed to the United States for somewhere around 140 years. He has sworn to serve and protect the country, the current president, and the office indefinitely. Nathaniel, being a vampire of his word, has upheld that promise and it has left him questioning his own judgment time and again. He has been left to question whether he is a man or a killing machine. Lately, he hasn't liked his own answer. The fact is that this is election year and the President currently in office has been keeping secrets from the people. These are the kind of secrets that could save their lives, the kind of secrets where a killer is involved; only it's not Cade. The serial-killer entity that has possessed a new body was just one small surprise for Cade. The secrets and lies told by the president to the people are no surprise either. The very idea that Cade is questioning exactly what the best way would be to protect the president; well now that is a first.

In a book layered with intrigue, government secrets, and all the other petty little things that politics include the plot just seems to thicken with every single page. The twists and turns will leave you shocked! I was overly pleased with the background information that we get on Cade in this book. No longer are we left in the dark about what has happened in the past, we get some of the details that I have been longing for. We see a side of Cade that really hasn't been shown much in prior books. Cade gave us a level of emotion in this book that I have never seen before. Not only did it make him more lifelike, but it brought me closer to him as a reader and more connected than I was before.

If you are just entering the series RED, WHITE, AND BLOOD might be the place to start. Farnsworth provides enough background information for new readers to understand who Cade is, what he does, and where the story has been that you shouldn't be confused just jumping in. If you have read the prior two novels this one will be a surprise that I am sure you will find is both a pleasure and a sure way to keep you waiting for book number four!
