Cougar wasn't sure what his future held. He felt he was damaged goods -- not necessarily physically since those wounds had healed nicely but emotionally and psychological wounds took longer to heal and what he feared most was that his would be lifelong. Those that served with him knew him to be a good man and when Sergeant Mary Tutan told him of an opportunity to hopefully get his head and life together he smartly decided to check it out.

That's how he wound up in South Dakota at the Double D Horse Sanctuary, where he was going to find a wild horse to train for competition. What he never expected to find was a life line if he really was as smart as people thought he would grab and never let go. Cougar wasn't the type to let an opportunity pass him by.

The first people he met were Celia Banyon and her son Mark. Celia was a volunteer at the Double D but had special reasons for being there as did so many others. Mark had been the victim of a terrible accident and although doctors felt his recovery should have gone very well he was still suffering from the trauma. Cougar was to understand that not only the horses at the sanctuary were in need of training, a gentle hand and love but so were many of the people there himself included.

The attraction between Cougar and Celia was instant and his connection to her son Mark was equally quick and relatively easy which was no easy feat. Reaching through to Mark was difficult and yet Cougar seemed able to communicate with this young boy who at the surface appeared unable to hear or speak since the accident. Celia's life was so complicated with her desperate search for a normal life for her son and her ongoing battle with her ex-husband whose current interest in Mark had all the earmarks of suspicious nature. Cougar was being further drawn into Celia and Mark's struggles until he found himself in the center of a family dynamic he truly hoped to avoid.

But the one thing Cougar could never do was turn his back on someone needing his help and even though there might be no future in it for himself this was a fight he was not going to back away from. There are all kinds of brave acts and putting your heart at risk is surely at the head of the list. As Celia and Cougar joined forces to get Mark out of his self- induced shell they were quickly becoming aware by healing Mark they were healing themselves as well.

Facing life's challenges is daunting and in ONE BRAVE COWBOY Kathleen Eagle shows remarkable understanding of how healing is done in stages with lots of love and patience.
