BURNING DOWN THE SPOUSE is an emotional story that is lightened by hilarious one-liners and charming situations. For the entire novel the reader feels sympathy for what Frankie was going through and what she had to do just to survive the day. At the same time, it is difficult not to laugh at the humor that is on every page. Towards the end, the reader will wonder how the main characters were able to find themselves is such outlandish situations that still seem like they could happen in real life.
The shimmering jewel of this novel is the cast of supporting characters. I loved the main characters, Frankie and Nikos but it was Nikos' family that stole my heart. Every time his mother graced the page, I found myself waiting to see what wonderful things she would say next, usually in broken English. They are the family that everyone wished they had growing up. Especially when mama is swinging her favorite rolling pin at the bad Mitch. If you are looking for a novel that perfectly balances serious with comedy, BURNING DOWN THE SPOUSE is the book for you.
