Kylie Galen's life seems to be spiraling out of control, and getting arrested at a party where underage drinking was going on is the final straw for her divorcing parents. Soon Kylie finds herself on a bus full of troubled teens headed for Shadow Falls Camp. Kylie realizes from her first encounters on the bus that something isn't quite right about the other teens, and when she arrives at camp, counselor Holiday Brandon confirms her suspicions. Shadow Falls Camp is for supernaturals: vampires, witches, shapeshifters, werewolves, fairies, ghost whispers; a place where young people can come to learn more about themselves and their special abilities and how to get along with other supernaturals. Not only that, Holiday assures Kylie she belongs at camp because she, too, has supernatural abilities. While Kylie has always felt like a bit of an outsider, she has trouble accepting she's special, especially when no one can tell her for sure what supernatural abilities she possesses.

As if accepting the impossible isn't difficult enough, Kylie finds she's rooming with Miranda, a less-than- successful witch and Della, a vampire, both of whom regularly get into arguments and cut Kylie no slack in her skepticism. Then there's Perry, a shapeshifter with a crush on Miranda; Lucas, a werewolf who may or may not have had something to do with the death of her cat many years ago when they were neighbors; and Derek, whose subtle gifts make her wonder if he's manipulating her emotions or if what she's coming to feel for him is genuine. Challenged to discover her heritage, Kylie comes to depend on her new friends as she begins to accept the unacceptable and embrace her destiny.

C.C. Hunter's BORN AT MIDNIGHT is a thrilling beginning to the Shadow Falls series. The newest in the super-popular teen paranormal genre, this is one of the best. Kylie is funny and vulnerable, struggling to deal with her real-world life and her life in a fantastical world she's not sure she wants to be a part of. Miranda and Della are wonderfully supportive and great at keeping Kylie grounded. Peppered throughout with humor and teen angst, BORN AT MIDNIGHT is a laugh-out-loud page-turner. This one is going on the keeper shelf next to my Armstrong and Meyer collections!

Book Summary

Born At Midnight

Kylie Galen has had a lot of crap tossed in her lap lately. Her parents are getting a divorce for who the heck knows why. Her boyfriend broke up with her because she wouldn't put out. And her grandmother died because . . . well, older people do that. But now, Kylie's acquired a stalker and she hasn't a clue what he wants or how to get rid of him . . . and she really wants to get rid of him because apparently she's the only one who sees him. Thinking she may be losing it, her parents send her off to see a psychologist who gets Kylie sent to Shadow Falls Camp. Kylie and her parents think it's a camp for troubled teens.

They thought wrong.

Kylie's surrounded by vampires, werewolves, fairies, witches and shapeshifters. And if she believes what they tell her, she's one of them. They're just not sure exactly how she fits in. As Kylie struggles to cope with the realization that these creatures even exist, and the fact that she might not be human, she's got two hot guys, a werewolf and a half-fairy vying for her attention. And they can just keep vying. Kylie's determined that before she lets her heart loose on love, she needs to unearth the truth. What does the ghost want? Who can and can't she trust? And most of all . . . What is she?
