K. T. Grant's THE KEY picks up about eight months after the ending of The Gate. Erika has been staying with a friend of hers in New Orleans. She left New York to try to get away from everything that had been thrown at her. From her father's death, to the drama surrounding Chris and Max. She also wanted to concentrate on the writing of her first erotic novel, which she hopes will become a best seller so she can save her father's company.

Max is tired of waiting for Erika to make up her mind and come to her senses. He is not a patient man and takes matters into his own hands. He sets up a business deal in New Orleans as an excuse to track her down. When he sees her with another man, it is all he can do not to drag her out of the bar and bind her to his bed.

When Erika comes back to New York a different woman. She is not the sheltered, fearful of large crowds, woman anymore, which has a lot to do with her relationship with Max, only she hasn't realized that yet. Chris is handling her book tour, and wants Erika to give him another chance. She has slightly forgiven him but her mind is always turning towards Max. Just when she thinks she has figured out who she wants, something plops down in her lap that she just can't ignore. However, this time, it is in the form of her best friend's sister, Paige.

Max can not believe that Paige has resurfaced and engaged to Abraham no less. This can not be good. However, before he can get to the bottom of her sudden appearance, Max is taken in for questioning and his involvement on the beating and robbing of Christopher Milton.

Erika does not believe for one moment that Max is involved in Chris's beating and robbing. When she is confronted by Paige at the hospital telling her she will need to choose sides, she can't help but think that this is only the beginning of the turmoil that Paige is starting to realize. Finding the only person in her life that comforts her and believes in her, she turns to Max. She knows he is worried about their future together...whatever that may be.

I really enjoyed THE KEY by K. T. Grant. Like the first book, this also drops off just as things are getting heated up. The more into the story I got, the more that I liked Max. He seems to be the only one with a mature thought in his head. In this book, Erika seems a bit more whiny and instead of dealing with her problems as they come up....she runs away from them or puts them off so much that someone else will make the decision for her. The reader also gets more of a glimpse into the world of Bryan, Catherine, and Raymond. I can't wait to see where the author goes with these three.

There is no mention of a third book in this series anywhere I found online, however, there was a bit of a teaser line at the end of this book that the next installment will be out sometime in 2015. You better believe I will patiently waiting to see what happens next in the Dark Path Series.
