Isabella has been in love with Candover since she was young. He was the only one who believed in her as she grew up the only heiress to the duchy. With Candover's support, she took command of the duchy and her finances when she came of age. In an attempt to save both of them the horror of a search for a spouse, Isabella proposes to James. She is humiliated and devastated when he refuses.
Candover's life has been one of duty to his title, his family and friends. He made a promise to his godfather that Isabella would never be forced to marry a man much older than her. Knowing the age difference between them, he turns Isabella down even as he yearns to accept.
Sophia Nash adds to her impressive list of titles with THE ONCE AND FUTURE DUCHESS. Her characters expose their weaknesses to the reader, making them real. It's impossible to resist their allure. This makes the reader intimately involved in the unfolding of the story. There are elements of tragedy and comedy finely wrapped into the story, which will keep the reader actively cheering for the characters to make the right decision. The ending of THE ONCE AND FUTURE DUCHESS leaves the reader with a satisfaction that all works out as it should.
Book Summary
A duchess in time saves a noble line …
In theory, the Duke of Candover is the most eligible peer in the realm. But in truth, he has a deep aversion to the merest hint of marriage, not to mention two botched engagements which have marked his jaded soul. Now, after a debauched bachelor party that causes public outcry, the Prince Regent is demanding that it's Candover's turn to be brought to heel. And Prinny secretly believes that Isabelle Tremont, the Duchess of March, is precisely the lady up to the challenge.
Isabelle must marry, but a day of reckoning with the man she's loved for years is her greatest fear. If Candover insists she's too young and innocent for a seasoned world- weary man like him, there's no shortage of other candidates. Gentlemen of prestige and position. Gentlemen whose attentions are driving Candover to jealous distraction. Yet one abandoned moment under the stars hints that if they can put aside pride and duty, then a love once denied might just be their destiny.
