The Red Garter has a mixed group that includes a 6'6" black piano player and a dwarf, along with the usual assortment of saloon girls. Rebecca signs on as a singer and dancer using the name Glory Bowen.
Slater Forrester, a gambler with a past as mysterious as her own, grimly figures the new singer will end up on her back like all the rest. But Rebecca has other plans, and eventually even Slater figures out that there's nothing ordinary about Glory Bowen. The beautiful Glory has the voice of an angel and her tenacity and determination have even the cynical Slater under her spell.
Rebecca makes mistakes but keeps plugging away, and Slater begins to feel protective. She's out of her depth and Slater finds himself rescuing her more often than not. At the same time, he's angry because she makes him feel things he'd rather not feel. The two begin a relationship that neither can afford.
Then their pasts intertwine as a mysterious person begins a protection game. It's pay up or have your business trashed. Unfortunately, someone has to die.
This is the third in the saga of the Forrester brothers and McKade keeps up the intensity and suspense as her characters are stretched to their limits. They stand firm against the odds and their strength and integrity brings them to a satisfying conclusion. The author's descriptions of the Old West and the people who grew out of the hardships are gritty and edgy enough to please the most demanding of fans. I like the way she tests her characters, but makes it all believable and romantic. I didn't want to put A REASON TO SIN down.
